Ofqual Confirms Final Rules New GCSE in British Sign Language

On 13 November 2025, Ofqual published its final decisions on the regulatory framework for the new GCSE in British Sign Language (BSL), a landmark moment for Deaf young people, educators, and the interpreting profession.
This qualification has been in development since the Department for Education confirmed in 2018 that BSL would be introduced as a GCSE subject. Following extensive consultations on subject content and assessment design, Ofqual has now finalised the rules exam boards must follow.
